Elevation pillows and leg rests

Elevation is one of the comfort measures NIAMS describes for a flare. Ordinary pillows can do it. A wedge or foot rest can make it steadier, especially overnight.

Last reviewed

What to look for

  • A firm surface that keeps its shape rather than flattening overnight.
  • A length that supports the calf, not just the heel, so the knee is not hyperextended.
  • A removable, washable cover.
  • A size that fits your bed or sofa.
  • For the desk, a foot rest with an adjustable angle.

Who it suits

People whose flares are in the foot, ankle, or knee, and anyone resting a joint for a few days.

Cautions

  • Support the whole leg so pressure does not sit on the heel or the sore joint.
  • People with heart, circulation, hip, or back problems should ask a clinician about how high and how long.
  • Elevation is comfort, not treatment, and does not replace flare medicine a clinician has prescribed.

None of these items treats gout. They can make rest, ice, elevation, or an already-prescribed routine easier. Medicine decisions stay with your clinician.
